Industrial Development in Solan :Solan District is today known as the industrial and commercial district of Himachal Pradesh. The fate of this district witnessed a new era when the then BJP government in the centre in 2002 announced a special industrial package to Himachal Pradesh .
Upto January 2007 an investment of Rs 15000 crore have been made in Solan district alone and more than 60 % of country's pharmaceutical industrial units have been shifted to various pockets of this district. It is also known as the pharma hub of India
Most
of the area of the district has not so far been fully surveyed for
the exploitation of mineral wealth. However, the existance of the
following minerals is evident in the district and some of these are
being excavated on, large scale for commercial purposes.
Limestone: Deposits of limestone varying from cement grade to chemical grade
occur at Darlaghat Kandaghat range, Kakarhatti and Kunihar belts.
It is being sent to the neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana as
well as being locally processed.
Dolomite
Limestone : An estimated reserve of about 52 million tonnes
has been reported at Nalagarh. This mineral is most suitable for the
manufacture of fertilizer and it is being supplied to the Nangal Fertiliser
Factory for the manufacture of Calcium Amonium Nitrate.
Gypsum: Occurance of Gypsum is reported near Kuthar and preliminary investigations
have revealed that the mineral is not of very good quality and the
mining cost may be on the higher side. As such it is not economical
.
Oil
and Natural Gas: The Oil ad Natural GAs Commission of the
Government of India has selected a point in RAmshahr for deep drilling
upto a depth of 4000 to 5000 metres for the explotation of oil and
natural gas. This project is very crucial so fas as oil finds in Himachal
Pradesh are concerned.
In
the late 50s and early 60s there was a general feeling that Himachal
Pradesh is not suitable for industrialisation. In spite of this view,
the State Government accepted the challange to bring this hilly state
on the industrial map of the country and statrted thinking about exploiting
the natural and hydel power resources. The resources available in
the State, were not fully exploited till early 70's due to lack of
infrastructural facilities, which are essential for carrying out the
diversified economic activity. Hence, agriculture and horticulture
sector remained the main stay of the population. It is strange that
Himachal Pradesh remained industrially backward even enjoying the
twin advantages of abundant power and industrial peace. In view of
the limited availability of agricultyral land and ever-growing unemployment,
the State Government decided in favour of intensive development of
industries. To achieve this object, a large number of steps were initiated
to promote the industrial development.
Before
Independence Solan was known for the location of Mohan Meakin Brewery,
a reputed house for the manufacture of Indian made foreign liquor
and beverages . Besides, there were some cottage industries to meet
the local requirements. The district achieved a land mark in teh industrial
development. It registered possibly the fastest growth rate during
a short span of 4/5 years. Before 1975, the district did not have
much of industries though the first industrial estate was set up in
the year 1961-62 at Solan. Another industrial area at Barotiwala was
set up during the year 1964-65. Till the setting up of the industrial
town Parwanoo, these estates could not make much stride. Parwanoo
was declared an industrial area in the year 1975 only and it is noteworthy
that all of the districts in the State, Solan has the largest number
of large, medium adn small scale industrial units. Better infrastructural
facilities, locational advantages, moderate climate conditions, and
dust free atmosphere are mainly responsible for the fast pace of the
process for development at Parwanoo. The important items being manufactured
by the different units are parts of tractors, automobile, bearings,
filters, wrist watches, watch cases, watch jewels, fruit products
and high density polythene films. This industrial town has taken a
lead in emerging as the largest industrial area in the State in a
quick span.
The
maximum concentration of electronic units is at Chambaghat and Jabbar
HAtti. The manufacture of television sets by Himtron, a State Government
Undertaking, has given a boost to the electronic industry in the state.
The other electronic units are Victory Company, Units of Tape Recorders
and assembling of watches. The Raghav Electronics which wa established
during 70s near Solan are engaged in watch making and their entire
production is exported. The fruit processing by Himprocesses at Jabli
and the apple processing plant of Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce
Marketing and Processing Corporation at Parwanoo have added to the
industrial activities of the State, in the matter of processing of
non-marketable fruits.
The
State Government has also taken steps for providing land and other
infrastructural facilities in the Barotiwala area, for the setting
up of new industries. Important units which have come up inthis area
Thapar Paper Mills etc. Nalagarh, a sub-divisional headquarters of
the district, is another fast developing industrial industrial town.
The units which have been set up are Sidharta Textile, Fertilizer
Unit of Himachal Pradesh, Mineral and Industrial Development Corporation,
two units of Wool Processing and Hypon Carbons and Himchemicals. In
addition, steel re-rolling mills, are also functioning around the
town.
